Halal oder Haram – Conceptual
„Halal (ḥalāl, arabic حلال) – or Turkish “Helal” – is an Arabic word which can be translated as “permitted” and “admissible”. All things and deeds, which are permitted or admissible according to the Islamic law, are called halal.
In addition to the dietary laws this applies to marriage, trade, manners and custom, or music.
Halal is between haram (حرام), forbidden, and fard (فرض), mandatory actions. There is a gray zone between halal and haram – makruh (undesirable). These things are not forbidden, haram, but tend toward it. Muslims should avoid things that are classified as makruh.
